A purple patch early in the first half gave Whakatane
Town a great chance
to beat Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers at Rex Morpeth Park on
Saturday. Although Rangers started well, the home team scored three good
goals in rapid succession, and then added a fourth after 25 minutes.
Seemingly the game was already out of sight for Rangers. However, they
battled back and finally got their game restarted. Late in the half, a
series of corners led to Jordan Ogilvy heading in a cross. After half
time
Christian Wetting was pushed as he attempted to head in a cross. The
Whakatane keeper saved the initial penalty attempt, but was judged to
have
moved off his line. Wetting made no mistake with the retaken chance.
Despite a good share of second half possession, Rangers could not get
any
closer and the final score was 4 - 2 to Whakatane. Richie Nillesen was
Rangers' player of the day. This Saturday Rangers are home to Papamoa,
kick off 2.30pm
On Sunday, Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers women's team were at home
to the high flying Taupo side. The visitors played some excellent
football, putting dangerous crosses into the Rangers goal area. By half
time Taupo were 7 - 0 up. Rangers didn't let their heads drop and fought
hard through to the end, the final score was 12 - 0. Kelly Wilson had
a
strong game in defence and was named player of the day. Ann-Elise Reynolds
also impressed with her tenacity.
