Rangers are through to the CNS Cup quarterfinals!
Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers were at home on Saturday to Ngongotaha's
Bay Two team in the CNS Cup. Rangers started very well, creating chances
in the first few minutes, but the visitors survived. Ngongotaha eventually
found their feet and after twenty minutes they were in front, their striker
finishing well after a counter attack. Rangers continued to dominate and
just before half time the equaliser came. Nestor Rocha squared the ball
across goal for Ben McPherson to score in the top corner.
The second half brought more of the same, Rangers controlling the play,
creating chances, but not finishing them off. Ngongotaha played some good
football and were always dangerous on the break too. At the end of ninety
minutes the score was locked at 1 - 1.
Extra time came and went, with both teams tiring in the soft conditions,
and no further goals.
Finally it all came down to a penalty shoot out. Rangers' keeper Adam
Mayor earned player of the day for the second week in a row, when he saved
two of the penalties. For Rangers, Tom Davison, Ben McPherson and Richie
Nillesen guided their penalties home. Christian Wetting slotted in the
final penalty, for Rangers to win the shoot out 4 - 3.
The quarter finals are in two weeks' time, but this Saturday, Rangers
can get ready by hosting Tauranga City Relics in the league. Relics taught
Rangers a lesson last time, so the home team will need to put it together
to make amends. Kick off at Awakeri will be at 2.30 pm.
Rangers' women had a bye this weekend, but will be back in action on Sunday,
also at home, against Te Puke with a 12.30 start.
