Gaining the three points was the main objective for Gary
Fowell Builders Plains Rangers when they traveled to meet Papamoa FC on
Saturday.
After an initial flurry from the home team, it was Rangers putting together
the better attacks for the most part early in the game. A James Krause
lay off gave Rangers winger Ben McPherson a chance and he grabbed it.
While Rangers had the better share of possession, the quick breaking Papamoa
forwards did cause a few anxious moments. A well struck shot cannoned
off the Rangers bar, but keeper John Noblett recovered quickly to claim
the ball safely.
In the second half, Rangers continued to press the home team, and tightened
up their defensive organisation. McPherson hit the woodwork, and there
were several half chances, notably to Cameron Wills and Jeff Krause. However,
the home team was awarded a penalty with fifteen minutes to go, and Rangers
were relieved to see it shot wide of goal. In the end, Rangers were deserved
winners, 1 - 0.
McPherson's high work rate saw him named player of the day, while Christian
Wetting was another to catch the eye. This Saturday Rangers have a good
test, playing at home to Tauranga City United who are one place above
them, in third place, on the BOP division one table.
