The long drive home from Taupo was pretty enjoyable for
Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers on Saturday.
Rangers had managed to round up enough players for the game, but had a
rather rearranged lineup. However, Rangers settled reasonably quickly
and it was a surprise when they went behind. A miss-hit clearance gave
Taupo the opportunity to score and they took it. Not letting this mishap
upset them, Rangers continued to build up play patiently and confidently.
The excellent playing surface meant both teams could pass the ball around
well, and Rangers strung some good moves together. Chances were being
created, but it took a bit of luck to grab the equaliser. Right full back
Adam Mayor hit a long ball in, and the home team keeper was caught in
no man's land, with the ball bouncing over his head into the goal. Rangers
continued to apply pressure, both down the wings and up front. The play
of the half was probably from captain Christian Wetting who beat man after
man getting into the penalty area before having his shot deflected away.
The score at half time was 1 - 1.
In the second half the home team had longer periods of possession and
forced Rangers to defend for spells. Jeremy Hawkes worked well with his
fellow defenders, to thwart the threats. In the midfield James Krause
and Wetting gave a good account of themselves too. The patience paid off,
a good move down the left and the ball was squared across for striker
Adam Barkla, who hit a hard low shot that the keeper couldn't keep out.
While Taupo still managed raids after the goal, it was Rangers who were
playing with confidence through to the final whistle. The final score
was Taupo 1, Plains Rangers 2.
It was a good performance from the whole Rangers line-up, with Mayor named
player of the day. This Saturday Rangers are away from home again, this
time at Papamoa in a CNS Cup quarter final.
