Plains Rangers FC

29 & 30 June 2024
Rangers men 3, Omokoroa Fury 2
Waiariki 0, Rangers women 0

Plains Rangers men had a unique experience on Saturday, playing on the Trident High School pitch for the first time. The change of home venue was to accommodate the EBOP (Edgecumbe) Kart Club using the Edgecumbe Domain for their Matariki two-day event.
The visiting Omokoroa Fury team were confident coming into the game, with back to back wins in their previous two games. They are a physical team that looks forward to their clashes with Rangers.
The game started with both teams playing fast attacking football, albeit with different playing styles. Rangers were relying mostly on passing their way up the field, with Omokoroa preferring to hit the ball long up the pitch for their speedy forward to run on to.
There were goal scoring chances for both teams, but after seventeen minutes Rangers forward Elias Thomas continued his impressive scoring run by slotting the first goal of the game through the goalkeeper's legs from an acute angle. The half time score was 1 - 0 to the home side.
Rangers got off to a quick second half start with Thomas scoring again, this time off a Jordan Hoete corner. The opposition stepped up and started pressing to try and get back into the game. In the 65th minute they attacked from a corner, but it was rebuffed by the Rangers' defence with Ben McPherson releasing a perfect long ball up the field to Thomas, who beat a defender and the goalie to score his third goal, nabbing his first hat trick of the season.
With the score at 3 - 0 Rangers thought the game was won, but Omokoroa came back with two goals of their own in the last 15 minutes to keep the good sized crowd of supporters on their toes. Referee Dave Taylor blew the final whistle after a few minutes of injury time with the full-time score remaining 3 - 2. The win gave Plains Rangers their second victory in a row. Thomas was named player of the day, with Anaaru Awhimate and Sione Lotu also in impressive form.
The result pushes Rangers up to 5th place in the ten team league. This Saturday they play the team one point above them, Otumoetai FC away. Kick off is at 12 noon.
Plains Rangers women had a foggy cold day for their game against Waiariki in Rotorua on Sunday. It was a very even game between the two teams, similar to the 1 – 1 draw in the last round. Rangers had lots of energy on and off the field, put in some strong tackles and had some spectacular moments of keeping the ball in play. Rangers had plenty shots at goal and are getting closer and closer to scoring the perfect goal. Rangers' passing game is improving well, with players now happy to pass the ball backwards as well as forwards.
The final score was 0 – 0. Player of the day for Rangers was Olivia Rossouw, who had a great game in the centre and was involved in everything. Alexaan-Kelly Puutu-Dredge also had a fine game on the wing and put in lots of running. Abby Wilkinson used good passing in her play in midfield.
This Sunday Rangers women are at home to another Rotorua team: Lakes FC. Kick-off at Edgecumbe is at 12.30.
