14 & 15 May 2022
Otumoetai Special Reserve 1, Plains Rangers men 0
Plains Rangers women 3, Papamoa Icons 0

On Saturday Plains Rangers men travelled to play Otumoetai Special Reserve at a cold windy Fergusson Park. Rangers got off to a poor start when the home team latched onto an attempted play out from the back and did well to lob the ball into the Rangers' net for an early goal. Otumoetai pushed hard on attack and the Rangers defence had to work hard to keep their speedy forwards under control. However, Rangers stepped up to the challenge and an even well-fought battle ensued. Rangers fashioned several decent chances, with Earle Tuhimata putting in several good quality crosses from the left. Captain James Hart had a shot well saved by the keeper and the hard-working Jon Barnes had a shot cleared off the line. At half time the score was still 1 – 0.
The second half continued in a similar vein. Otumoetai kept pressing the Rangers defence, and Rangers had their share of attacking forays too. The best one was a neat flick on from Tuhimata putting Phil Ballingall in towards goal, but the Otumoetai defence scrambled to block the attempt. The final score remained 1 – 0 to Otumoetai. Player of the day for Rangers was left back Ian Gray, who put in an outstanding defensive display. Not far behind were right back Shane Baillie and Earle Tuhimata.
This Saturday Rangers men are at home to Rotorua United.
On Sunday Plains Rangers women hosted Papamoa Icons and were thrilled to notch up their first win of the season. Rangers worked some fine one-two passing up the sides of the field and scored two goals in the first half, through Katie Peterson. In the second half Rangers survived several injury knocks and Peterson added another goal to complete her hat-trick. The final score was Plains Rangers 3, Papamoa Icons 0.
Katie Peterson was named player of the day. Also impressing were defenders Sarah Wigzell, Dani Howard, midfielder Amie Morris and the talented Alexaan-Kelly Puutu Dredge.
This Sunday Rangers women are away to Papamoa Legends.
