Plains Rangers women had a surprisingly nice fine afternoon for their football clash with Lakes FC on Sunday. The visitors got lucky with an early goal before the teams settled down to an evenly fought game. Both sides put together some good passing moves. Rangers did well through passing the ball back, then wide and forward. Late in the half, Rangers striker Tayla Jones was put through the Lakes defence only to be denied by their keeper Ella Pryde getting off her line to make a brilliant close range save. It paid off, because the ball was launched long downfield and Lakes doubled their lead just before the break.
The second half continued the balance of the first half. Amie Morris pushed up into the midfield and was created some good moves. The visitors somehow snuck a goal on a rare foray forward after ten minutes. Rangers continued to push for their reward, with player of the day Stevie Clarke putting her body on the line and earning several corners. Rangers grabbed a goal when Acacia Wakefield and Danielle Haldane combined well and Haldane finished it off. The visitors grabbed one more goal to make it 4 – 1 in the end.
Rangers would be pleased with the football played and the game was a lot closer than the score suggests. While Clarke was a stand-out, others to impress included winger Shannon Frost, Jones and Morris and stand-in goalkeeper Paige Pullar.
This Sunday Rangers women are away to Tauranga Blue Rovers. Rangers men, who won their game by default, will travel to play Tauranga City New Blues on Saturday, hoping to keep their winning streak going.
