Plains Rangers AFC
3rd July 2021
Plains Rangers 0, Otumoetai Special reserve 0
Plains Rangers started the second round of their BOP div two campaign with a well fought home match against Otumoetai Special reserve. Despite their mounting injury toll having an effect on the team line-up, Rangers started out well and had the better of the first half. Captain James Hart was strong in setting up a lot of attacking moves. The best of these had an Elijah Wetting shot saved, a Phil Ballingall shot hitting the woodwork and two headers by Ian Gray saved. At half time the score was 0 – 0.
After the break Otumoetai, aided by a further couple of injury changes in the home team, got their game going well. However, the Rangers defence refused to buckle. Left back Jacob Davis impressed with a number of timely interceptions and good confident play. He was later named player of the day. Keeper Christian Wetting was again in excellent form, sweeping up play well and he pulled off a vital fingertip block of a cross that was heading for an unmarked Otumoetai striker at the far post. The final score remained 0 – 0 and it was probably a fair indication of the game, which had been played in good spirit in the sunny conditions.
This was only the second time this season that Rangers had not scored, but, positively, it was also their second clean sheet in a row. This Saturday Rangers are away to Papamoa Buccaneers.
