Otumoetai Legends 2, Plains Rangers 3
Second division Plains Rangers upset expectations on Saturday by knocking out BOP division one team Otumoetai Legends out of the Miller Cup.
A calm day greeted the Rangers football team for their away match at the usually windy Fergusson Park.
The Bay 1 & Bay 2 league games were suspended to make way for the first round of the local version of the knock out FA Cup, in which teams from both divisions are involved.
Plains Rangers opened up the scoring in the first half with a fine goal by Earle Tuhimata. Good team work brought the ball forward and Elijah Wetting sent in a long cross from the left. Tuhimata's header on goal was saved by the keeper but Tuhimata collected the rebound and smashed the ball into the net.
Not long after this, a Rangers defender brought an opposition player down in the box and Otumoetai were awarded and scored a penalty.
It was 1 all at half time.
The Rangers came out strongly in the second half and striker Phil Ballingall scored a great goal to put Rangers back in front.
Not long after that Rangers captain James Hart scored with his head to make it 3-1. The relief of having a two goal buffer soon vanished. Some good forward play from Otumoetai put a ball behind the Rangers defence and they slotted a goal to make it 3-2. The last 15 minutes was a hectic affair with Otumoetai on the offensive trying to get an equalizer which would have taken the game into extra time.
However the Rangers' game management was up to the task and they held on to win the game 3-2. The player of the day plaudits were shared by Elijah Wetting and Edison Indarte.
The remainder of the Miller Cup and Bowl competition will be held in a one day tournament later in the season. This weekend, league fixtures return, with Rangers hosting Otumoetai FC at their Edgecumbe Domain home ground at 2pm on Saturday.
