13 & 14 June 2020
Plains Rangers men 2, Papamoa Old Boys 0
Plains Rangers women 2, Otumoetai 2

Plains Rangers were pleased to get off to a strong start to the football season with two good performances at home at the weekend.
The men's team's highly anticipated game on Saturday against Papamoa Old Boys got off to a quick start with several early shots on goal by the home team attackers. The long balls played through to Jamaal James paid off in the 42nd minute when he slotted a left foot shot at an acute angle past the keeper to go in off the far post and in to the goal.
The Papamoa team went in to half time 1-0 down. The away team had more possession in the second half and provided some spirited attacking moves but the Rangers defenders were solid and couldn't be broken down. Experienced Ian 'Makem' Gray and the fleet footed Carl Imlig shone in their central defensive role pairing. Rangers' players Hamish Wilde and James Hart were dynamic in the midfield and provided the perfect foil to turn the defenders' turnovers into attack.
This was highlighted when Wilde was fouled in a promising attack in the 57th minute. Hart took the resulting free kick. His strike swerved around the defensive wall causing the keeper to move left then dive right but to no avail, the ball smashed into the back of the old onion bag to the delight of the crowd. The game was well refereed by Neil Walker. The 2-0 win to the Edgecumbe based Rangers team was well deserved. James Hart's calmness in midfield earned him player of the day.

On Sunday Rangers women hosted Otumoetai. Rangers started strongly and Mishka Barry scored after fifteen minutes. Rangers put some good passing moves together and worked hard in an even battle. The visitors bounced back and at half time the score was 1 – 1. Dani Howard-Morris scored Rangers second goal ten minutes into the second half and Otumoetai scored to keep the game tight. Rangers kept their work rate going to the end and a 2 – 2 draw was the final result.
Michelle Corbett was player of the day.
This weekend Rangers men are away to Tauranga Old Blues and Rangers women are away to Blue Rovers.
