On Saturday Plains Rangers were at home to Rotorua United. In contrast to the week before, Rangers did not start out well, with too many loose touches and the visitors capitalised on it. After fifteen minutes, a cross hung up in the breeze and was headed in at the far post. Three minutes later Rotorua scored again and it looked like being a hard day for the home team. However, Rangers kept working and won a corner soon afterwards. Petir Gray floated it across nicely for James Hart to power in a header. Rangers had the better of the rest of the half and went into half time with hopes high.
However, soon after the restart, Rotorua carved open the Rangers defence to extend the lead and then ten minutes into the half a good move saw them score again. Rangers kept battling. Fullback Ronan Mitchell took a shot from 30 metres which cannoned into the crossbar and Petir Gray buried the rebound into the net. There was plenty of action for the spectators, as the visitors again extended their lead on twenty minutes, then Gray's determination led to another goal for Rangers. Sione Lotu went within centimetres of another Rangers' goal as his shot flashed across goal, but Rotorua hung on for a 5 – 3 win.
The Rotorua midfield and forwards had done their job with speed and good linking play. Rangers' best were player of the day Sione Lotu, keeper Christian Wetting and centre midfielders Petir Gray and James Hart.
This Saturday Rangers have a tough challenge, the short trip to play neighbours and league leaders Whakatane Town.
On Sunday, Plains Rangers women were at home to the strong Te Puke team. Rangers defence had to fight hard, but the visitors went on to win 11 – 0. Player of the day was Ranee Whiting who ended up in goal and did a fine job. Others to impress included midfielders Mikaela Mathis and Zahara Magee, Gemma Stuckey and defender Jenny McIntyre.
This weekend Rangers women are away to Tauranga City United.
