Plains Rangers women 0, Papamoa 12
Luckily Plains Rangers men had no game on Saturday, as it gave the field a chance to dry out for the women's team to play on Sunday.
Plains Rangers women were at home to Papamoa in the first round of the new Bay Bowl competition. This competition was for those teams that did not get in the top four of BOP division one. Those teams were placed in the Federation Premier league with Waikato's top four.
Papamoa were disappointed to have just missed out on the top four and they were determined to prove it at Awakeri on Sunday. The visitors played a slick passing game and got on the board in the eighth minute. However, Rangers were determined in defence and held them out till the 29th minute when a deflected shot beat keeper Joe Ingle and went in. Rangers made the visitors battle and the threat of Kiahli Ibbetson and Gemma Stuckey up front created some good counter attacks. At the break though, Papamoa led 4 – 0.
The second half again saw Papamoa score early and then wait till midway through the half before their next goal (one created with an excellent switch of play). Ibbetson got some good chances through the good work of Mikaela Mathis in the midfield, and the Papamoa keeper had to pull off a couple of excellent saves to keep her out. However, despite the brave goalkeeping of Ingle for Rangers, the home team ran out of steam in the final ten minutes. The final score was 12 – 0.
Joe Ingle was player of the day for Rangers. Others to impress were Macca, Gemma, Kiahli and Emma O.
This weekend Plains Rangers men have a local derby, at home to Kawerau, who are in fine form at the moment. Kick off at Awakeri is at 2pm.
Plains Rangers women have the same opponent –Kawerau - on Sunday. They are away at Tarawera Park with a 12.30pm kick off.
