Papamoa 3, Plains Rangers men 2

On Saturday SLH Contracting Plains Rangers travelled to play Papamoa in BOP division two. The home team adjusted early to the breezy conditions and surprised Rangers by going close twice. After five minutes they had the ball in the net but it was ruled out through off-side. Soon after, left winger Jaiden Ibbetson raced back to clear the ball off his own goal line, with the keeper beaten. Rangers got their game flowing better after these frights, with some nice passing in the midfield through player of the day Richie Nillesen in particular. Papamoa went close with a header and late in the half Hamish Wilde had a good chance. However, the score was 0 – 0 at the break.
Again, the home team opened the second half better and scored an early goal. Rangers reacted well, Tijmen Corporaal played Wilde in, but his goal-bound shot was stopped by a defender's arm. Wilde stepped up to dispatch the resulting penalty and even up the scores. However, Papamoa retaliated quickly with a goal following hesitation in the Rangers defence. Ibbetson then limped off injured after a couple of promising runs down the wing to create openings. The action continued. A Christian Wetting free kick bent around the wall but was very well saved by the Papamoa keeper diving full length. Midway through the half Wetting fed a nice ball through to Wilde who put a good finish past the keeper to again even the scores up. With ten minutes to go Papamoa produced the best move of the game and scored an excellent goal. Despite the number of players cramping up, Rangers were still in it and were unlucky not to grab the equaliser when Wilde hit the post in the last minute. The final score was Papamoa 3, Plains Rangers 2.
Rangers had some good passages of play, especially some of the passing moves, but they also gave away possession and that is something to tighten up on for their next game, away to Tauranga City.
