Plains Rangers hosted two home games this weekend, but the visitors ran away with the points!
On Saturday, SLH Contracting Plains Rangers men were at home to league leaders Taupo. Rangers started the game strongly, keeping Taupo pinned back in their half. However, Taupo had a break out after ten minutes and scored with their first attack. Rangers continued to play well, with some nice passing. Young striker Petir Gray had a couple of chances. Late in the half, Taupo were starting to get their rhythm and they scored after a good run to lead 2 – 0 at the break.
Taupo had the better of the second half, but had to work hard for the win. Midway through the half they sealed their victory with a third goal, to win 3 – 0.
Rangers' best was centre back Mike Johnstone, who was named player of the day. James Hart and Christian Wetting combined well in the centre midfield, and Matthew Eveleens had a solid debut in goal. This Saturday Rangers are in the first round of the Bay Sportsmed Cup. They have an early kick off at Tauranga City Utd.
On Sunday, Plains Rangers women were at home to the skilful Whakatane Town side. Rangers held a good shape in the first half and Whakatane had to battle to get shots on goal for a while. Rangers defence was solid, with player of the day Ranee Whiting and Sarah Boyce combining well in the centre. Young centre forward Cassidy Spillman had a good run with the ball to get the home team supporters hopes up. Late in the half Whakatane scored three fairly quick goals to have a 5 – 0 lead at half time. Whakatane dominated the second half to have a comfortable win 14 – 0 in the end.
Rangers still enjoyed their football. There was nice defensive work by Tara Edwards, Jenny McIntyre had a good game on the right wing, whether it was getting the ball towards the goal or coming back and helping defend. Player of the day went to Ranee Whiting. She had a great game in defence, stopping plenty of attacks, making some good clearances and she managed to have a run up the field as well.
