Plains Rangers were up for their final BOP division two game of the season. It was a close end to the season. Three teams were vying for the honours of winning the lower split of the division, second placed Rangers travelled to play third placed Papamoa, with top placed Whakatane travelling to meet fourth placed Rotorua United.
Rangers had good numbers to choose from and fielded a well-balanced side. The home team were also determined and an even first half was played with scoring chances few and far between. Rangers defence was sound and well organised, making the going hard for the hosts.
In the second half Rangers gained the upper hand in terms of possession and territory and chances started coming. Sam McPherson had a chance when the keeper was caught in possession. The Papamoa keeper pulled off an excellent save to keep a James Hart shot out. The pressure of corners mounted also. In the end the late introduction of Tiemen Corporaal senior made the difference. Some good interpassing between Corporaal, Ali Scott and Ben McPherson led to the substitute squeezing a shot into the goal. The players and a strong band of travelling supporters were ecstatic.
Rangers pushed for another goal to seal the win, but had to survive a late scare when a rare Papamoa raid hit the crossbar. The final score was Papamoa 0, Plains Rangers 1.
Meanwhile, there was late drama at Rotorua when the home team scored a last gasp equaliser to grab a 2 – 2 draw, handing top spot to Rangers. Rangers were also pleased not to concede a goal, and ended up having the best defensive record of all the BOP division two teams. Player of the day was defender Barrie Hawkes.
Rangers have built up a steady squad, playing a good style of football, under coach Christian Wetting this season and will look to further success next year.
Rangers' women have also had a good run of form lately and they look forward to the Pullar Cup tournament to finish their season on September 21.
Plains Rangers club break up and prize giving is on October 18th.
