Plains Rangers women 2, Tauranga City 1
Alignments Plus Plains Rangers women's team finished their season on a high. After securing their first ever win three weeks ago, Rangers have gone on to make it three in a row!
Rangers were at home to table leaders Tauranga City on Sunday in the final round of the BOP split women's league. Rangers got off to a flying start. Good work from Shirley Patterson and Gillian Green resulted in midfielder Olivia Davidson scoring with a nice shot. Tauranga came back with a spell of pressure but Rangers weathered the storm with Kelly Wilson strong in a good defensive line. However, after 25 minutes the visitors scored with a good shot to equalise. At half time the game was locked up at 1 – 1.
Fifteen minutes into an even second half, Rangers again took the lead. Lanae Jarrett cleared the ball well to Shirley Patterson who smacked in a good shot from 20 metres. While Tauranga battled away to try and equalise, Rangers kept them mostly to long shots which keeper Kate Robbie held onto comfortably. With fifteen minutes left, Rangers came close to a third goal when striker Mishka Barry hit the post, and Patterson couldn't quite bury the rebound. The final score was Plains Rangers 2, Tauranga City 1.
Coach Michel Nillesen was proud of his team's excellent all round effort and named them collectively players of the day. Rangers' women now await the Pullar Cup tournament on September 21 to finish the season.
Meanwhile, Rangers men have their final league game coming up this Saturday, away to Papamoa.
