Plains Rangers had to settle for a 1 – 0 loss in their BOP division two game with Whakatane A on Saturday. The experienced Whakatane team settled into a pattern quickly and had their visitors under pressure for quite a bit of the first half. After half an hour Whakatane were awarded a free kick. The ball was swung in and the goal was scored, leaving Rangers appealing for offside.
The game evened up after the break. Rangers had a number of early attacks, with a Jaiden Ibbetson header going closest. However, Whakatane hung onto their lead and took the points.
Rangers player of the day was midfielder Ali Scott, while Carl Pirihi took the honours for the home team.
This Saturday Rangers men have a daunting task in the Bay Sportsmed Cup. They are at home to BOP division one leaders Kawerau Town.
On Sunday Alignments Plus Plains Rangers women were at home to Rotorua United White. The game developed into an exciting hard battle between two evenly matched teams. After fifteen minutes Rangers took the lead, with Lanae Jarrett blasting in a shot from 25 metres. Five minutes later Rotorua were back on even terms when the ball was scrambled in after a corner. Just before half time, Rangers went close after good work from Jenny McIntyre put Kate Simons within range. The second half was a continuation with both teams creating chances. McIntyre had a good shot saved and Kat de Bruin went close twice for Rangers. In the final minutes though, a desperate goalmouth scramble saw Rotorua denied and the final score remained 1 – 1.
Julie Reihana's excellent work in defence earned player of the day honours. This Sunday Rangers women also have a daunting task, away to unbeaten competition leaders Old Blues.
