On Saturday Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers traveled
to play league leaders Katikati.
The home team created chances in the first minutes, Rangers player-coach
Kirk Bain did well to head a shot and its follow up off the goal line.
However, Rangers settled into a good pattern of football and an even first
half ensued. Patrick Lambert went close with a shot, but then a Katikati
break out led to the opening goal, when the loose ball was pounced on
in front of the Rangers goal. Mark Jeynes forced a fingertip save from
the home keeper after a long throw from Bain had the home team scrambling.
Just before the break a Katikati corner was forced home and they led 2
- 0 at half time.
Rangers were shocked in the first minute of the second half when a well
struck speculator sailed into the top corner of their goal and five minutes
later another goal had the spectators thinking the flood gates might open.
However, Rangers dug in and defended. The defensive trio of Bain, player
of the day Jeynes and Grahame Sims were outstanding. Rangers' perseverance
deserved some reward, and left wing Jacob Heath almost provided it. A
good passing move sent him into the box, but the Katikati keeper made
a great save to keep out his shot across goal. The final score was Katikati
4 Plains Rangers 0.
This Saturday Rangers are at home to Taupo A. Kick off at Awakeri is at
2.30 pm.
On Sunday Rangers women finally got a result deserving
of their efforts. A big defensive effort earned a 0 - 0 draw at home to
Te Puke. Player of the day Ranee Whiteley kept the lines clear with some
good clearances and everyone else worked hard to keep the first clean
sheet ever for Rangers women.
This Sunday Rangers women are at home to Papamoa in the Federation Plate.
Lets hope they can put a goal past ex-Rangers keeper Stacey Flintoff!
