Football lessons were the order of the day for Plains
Rangers last weekend.
On Saturday the highly rated Tauranga City Relics team traveled to meet
Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers at Awakeri. The Awakeri pitch was
its usual uneven self, but this did not stop Relics from playing an excellent
passing game with constructive movement off the ball. The visitors opened
the scoring with a twenty metre strike from Mark Lowrie. Midway through
the half the result was looking likely with two quick goals to Relics.
They led 4 - 0 at the break. Rangers had a better share of possession
in the second half. Ben McPherson had a couple of good opportunities and
Jacob Heath should also have done better. However late in the game two
more Relics goals, the last one a beauty, sealed their win 6 - 0.
If Relics continue to play in this style, they will be title contenders.
Rangers will need to be more consistent in their play to push the stronger
teams. Best performers for the home team were Dan Overdevest, Kirk Bain
and Hamish Wilde. This Saturday Rangers are away to Opotiki in the Bay
Sportsmed Cup competition.
On Sunday Plains Rangers women were handed a heavy defeat away to Taupo,
losing 16 - 0. Gillian Green was Rangers' best on the day.
This Sunday it doesn't get any easier, with league leaders Rotorua visiting.
