Plains Rangers AFC
15 September Plains Rangers men 3 Taupo
16 September Plains Rangers women 0 Te Puke 6
Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers men played their last
league game for the season on Saturday.
Rangers were at home to Taupo. The visitors are
a young team and they set out to play a fast brand of football. The first
half was fairly even, with attacking intent at both ends of the pitch.
Rangers had to contend with a number of free kicks awarded to their youthful
visitors, often in attacking positions. Ironically, it was from a free
kick that Rangers opened the scoring. Ten minutes before half time Christian
Wetting floated the ball into the box and Ben McPherson buried it in the
net. One minute later, Taupo were on the attack and Wetting, having a
rare run in the field, was back heading the ball off his own line! Just
before the break Rangers player-coach Richie Nillesen had a volley well
saved by the Taupo keeper.
The second half saw Rangers playing some nice one touch football and starting
to control the game. However it took half an hour before the next goal.
Defender Kirk Bain played a good ball in. Andy Brabant's shot was saved
but McPherson latched onto the rebound to score. Five minutes later Jaiden
Ibbetson made the game safe for the home team with a terrific solo run
and a goal. Taupo never let up though and scored with a good header. The
final score was Plains Rangers 3 Taupo 1.
James Hart was named player of the day for Rangers after a good performance
at left back. Rangers now have to wait two weeks until their Bay Sportsmed
Bowl final against Ngongotaha on the 29th.
On Sunday Gary Fowell Builders Plains Rangers women played their final
game for the season, in the Pullar Plate final. They were up against Te
Puke in very wet conditions. Rangers put in a good performance, creating
a number of chances, but went down 6 - 0 in the end. Player of the day
was Kylie Keys who was in great form on the right wing. "The best
she's ever played," quoted coach Michel Nillesen. Pullar Cup winners
Old Blues also complimented the Rangers girls afterwards, calling them
an awesome team of tough ladies!
