Sun Aug 27 away Melbourne City loss 0 3   Australia Cup. Academy and youngsters filling out team. Unlucky deflected goal by ex-Nix Ugarkovic in first half. Zawada a couple of chances. Late in game two shots cleared off line.
Sun Oct 22 away Westn Syd Wandrrs draw 0 0   Hot conditions. Paulsen two excellent saves in first half. Very compact in defence. Pennington close range header superby saved. Captain Rufer strong in midfield. Youngsters Surman, Kelly-Heald and Paulsen shone in defence. Lots of players cramping up. Debuts for Fin Conchie and Mohammed Al-Taay off sub bench.
Sat Oct 28 home Perth Glory win 2 1 O. Zawada, B. Kraev 5.30pm Ex-Nix keeper Sail gifts Zawada an early chance and he lobs it in! Payne bombing down the right flank. Kraev hit the post. Perth controlled last 20 of first half. Ben Old came on, made impact. Kosta ran at defence, pass to Zawada, then Kraev to score. Shirts off. Kelly-Heald silly hand ball gave late penalty, saved brilliantly by Paulsen. First league win for coach Chiefy. Att 6100.
Sat Nov 4 home Brisbane Roar win 5 2 T. Payne, Zawada (3), Kraev Double header, followed women's game. Conceded in the first minute to dampen the 7000 crowd. Tim Payne had acres of space most of the game. He made run into the area, cut back and scored with his left foot. Pressure from Kosta made defenders error and Zawada scored. He also hit the post before half time. Roar came back to 2 - 2. Kelly-Heald a good cross for Zawada to header in over top of the defender. Bozhidar Kraev a great run and super finish in front of the jubilant Yellow Fever. Zawada knocked a Pennington cross in as well to get his hat-trick. Rufer's switches of play were great, as was Kosta and Payne.
Fri Nov 10 away Melbourne Victory draw 1 1 O. Goal Kosta's 300th A League game. 30 degrees. Victory dominating scored a nice goal. Ref dishing out yellows. Late in half we back in it. Kosta good ball across assisted an own goal. Soon after Pennington flattened in box, penalty overturned because of VAR debatable offside. 1 - 1 half time. Ref tried to give penalty for handball, but overturned. Their striker dived in box, no yellow card given. Somehow we survived for the draw. 0 shots on goal all game!
Sat Nov 25 home Melbourne City win 1 0 Kraev First game of a great double header at Mt Smart Auckland. Zawada out injured. Good chances created, Kosta's shots saved, Ball doing well up front. Second half goal. Lovely pass Al Taay to Ball who squared cross goal to Kraev to tap in. Rufer and Pennington excellent in midfield. Payne bombing down the line despite only returning from 2 games in Europe. Paulsen a superb penalty save (again) to deny J MacLaren. Lucky two line clearances by Kelly-Heald. Fine team showing.
Sat Dec 2 away Western United win 1 0 B. Old Kosta and Kraev both had good chances in first half, and Western hit the post. Tim Payne hit the post early second half, Ball had a shot blocked. Paulsen a couple of good saves. Defending well Surman and Wootton solid. A break with Ben Old and Kosta, nice interpassing, Old tucks it away. Flagged for offside, but over-ruled by VAR. Goal! Top of the league!
Sat Dec 9 home Newcastle Jets loss 0 3   Conceded early, then again at end of first half. Then again, straight after half time. Did push hard for goals. Payne hit the post and had shot pushed onto the crossbar.. Pennington, Kraev and Kosta shots saved. Rufer strong in second half. Young defenders Kelly-Heald and Surman not so convincing today. Knocked off top of the league.
Mon Dec 18 away Macarthur win 3 0 Kraev, K. Barbarouses (2) Zawada injured. Old and Sutton starting. Kraev header well saved by Kurto, Pennington header too. Good chances. Great team goal after Kosta fed Old who pulled it across goal for Kraev to steer home. 1 - 0 HT. The quick passing combinations were superb in second half. Pennington long ball to Kraev, cut inside and slid across for Kosta to score. Two min later Payne played one-two with Ball and then fired it across for Kosta to slot home. Nek minute a penalty to Macarthur. Paulsen saves his third of the season, this time from Davila. Top of the league again!
Sat Dec 23 home Westn Syd Wandrrs win 2 0 Barbarouses, Old Oppo and Ex-Nix coach / villain Marko Rudan shouted the Yellow Fever a round on their pub crawl, costing him nearly $900. A very cagey and even first half and well into the second half, little space to play in. Late in the game Wanderers hit the post, via a brilliant fingertip save from Paulsen. Kraev had a goal disallowed for offside, Kosta deflected one in off his arm, disallowed. 90 minutes, plus 2. Rufer spots a Kosta run and sends a great long ball for him to touch past the keeper and finish from tight angle. Wanderers kick off while the Nix are celebrating and have their unopposed goal ruled out. Then Kosta charges forward on a counter-attack, feeds Ben Old who scores with a fine shot. 2 - 0. Cue a boisterous continuation of the pub crawl. Phoenix will stay top of the league for Xmas.
Fri Dec 29 away Sydney FC loss 1 3 Barbarouses Under a lot of pressure first half, Sydney dominated. 1 - 0 HT. We pressed them second half and created good chances. Ben Old carving them up with speedy dribbles. He played through to sub Oskar Van Hattum who pulled it across for Kosta to equalise. Late misplaced pass out from Paulsen gave Sydney the ball and they scored, then another one well in injury time. Sutton did well at left back. Kraev good too. Phoenix stay top, after their number of wins trumped the usual goal difference when teams are equal on points. A memorable A League mess up! Change the rules, tell no one and then forget you'd done it!
Thurs Jan 4 away Adelaide Utd draw 2 2 Barbarouses (2) Great football to start with. A Kraev goal ruled out for offside. Kosta scored after a Rufer cross was headed across goal by L. Kelly-Heald. Adelaide bounced back when their tall Japanese striker got a free header from a corner. Straight after half time Kosta scored again, blasting home a loose ball after a Tim Payne cross caused problems. The same Adelaide striker scored again after a blistering run from Irankunda. Adelaide had better of the late stages, but had defender sent off for bringing down Van Hattum. Sutton blasted a late chance wide.
Sun Jan 14 away Perth Glory win 4 3 Barbarouses (2), A. Rufer, T. Payne Unity round. Only 1600 attended. Seesawing game. Perth opened scoring early. Kosta scored cutting back onto left foot after fine pass from Bally. 1 - 1 HT. Rufer scored after Kraev was brought down, but Pennington played on, ball cleared out, Rufer smacked it home from 20m. Perth equalised. Payne scored after good cutback from Kosta. Perth equalised again, then Kosta scored the winner, turning in a good cross from Payne. Top of the league again.
Fri Jan 19 home Melbourne Victory draw 1 1 Rufer (pen) A lot of defending, Nix well contained. Just before HT Payne poor touch then lunging tackle to recover. Yellow card upgraded to red. Great defence especially from Wootton and Surman, Rufer and Pennington. However a late shot deflected in put Victory in front. Nix battled away. Sub Van Hattum bundled over in injury time, penalty! Captain Rufer stepped up to put it away. Stay Top of Table!
Sat Jan 27 away Newcastle Jets win 2 1 Rufer (pen), Zawada D. Ball brought down and Rufer slams home the penalty after 3 min. Wootton headed a goal bound shot onto the crossbar and away after Paulsen lost the ball off his line. Nix playing 3 at back and dropping deep with Payne suspended. Pennington doing well out wide on right in a 3 -5 -2 formation. HT 1 - 0. Defending, playing on break in second half too. Old subbed on and made impact. Zawada subbed on after 7 weeks out with injury. Jets scored deflected shot with ten to go, then an Old pass found Zawada who belted it past the keeper with 3 to go. Rufer yellow means suspended for next game. Nix go 2 points clear at top.
Fri Feb 2 away Brisbane Roar draw 1 1 Kraev Warm and humid. Rufer and Payne suspended, Sutton injured. Isaac Hughes and Van Hattum starting debuts. Cagey first half. 0 - 0 HT. Al Taay very good, lovely cross for Kraev to head home. Mostly dropped deep, deeper and deeper. Rojas debut for Brisbane subbed on. Hughes important block shot. Kosta shot well saved. 94 minutes Roar scored a header after our defender seemed to have been fouled. Still top but disappointing.
Tues Feb 6 home Central Coast Mrns draw 0 0   Waitangi Day, 12300 attended. Zawada, Al-Taay, Sutton out injured, Pennington suspended. Cagey first half, both teams reduced each other's chances. Kosta close with a diving header. A bit more attacking second half. Rufer held middle well, Ball created openings. Pretty fair result. Still top.
Sat Feb 10 home Western United win 2 0 Pennington, O. Goal Delayed start because kitman had to drive to Hutt Valley to get our yellow strip after WU turned up with their dark strip. Kraev's shirt not there so given #49! Fans happy we were made to play in yellow. Windy, cool, only 6400 attended! New Costa Rican international signing Youstin Salas (not playing) presented to the crowd before kick off. Great passing move Payne - Ball - Kosta - Kraev squared to Pennington tap in after 3 min. David Ball working hard and creating openings. Western came into the game. Straight after half time Payne cross and a good header from Pennington bounced off defender for oggie. Rufer subbed off after 60 min meant we struggled for a bit. Finished quite strongly.
Sun Feb 18 away Macarthur win 2 1 Barbarouses (2) Delayed an hour because of thunderstorm. Five players out injured, including Rufer in warm-up, also Payne, Pennington, Sutton, Kraev. Early pen against Surman not given after VAR intervention. Kelly-Heald great run into box, trip, pen to Kosta. Old some great runs. Exc defensive shape. 1 - 0 HT. Second half Ball cross, Old pull across, Kosta bundled in. Youstin Salas debut, looked very good. Macarthur goal with ten to go. Held on well. Top of league by 5 points.
Sat Feb 24 away Perth Glory draw 0 0   11.45pm kick off. Cagey first hour. Livened up when Salas, Zawada and Kraev subbed on. Defence very solid. Strong Zawada header batted away by Sail. Old hit post. Rufer got through, but tackled. Salas made a great late covering tackle. Rufer and Old outstanding. Top of table still, lead cut to 3 points.
Sun Mar 3 home Adelaide Utd win 3 2 Old (2), O. van Hattum Salas first start. Zawada late withdrawal from sub bench. Disjointed play in first half, but a neat pass from Payne saw Ben Old beat offside trap and goal allowed after VAR intervention. Kraev went close several times. 1 - 0 HT. Rufer gave away penalty which was well taken. Immed 4 subs. Within seconds sub Barbarouses raid, cross to Old shot partially saved and tapped in by sub Oskar v Hattum first league goal. Then corner to far post. Wootton shot saved, laid off rebound which was smashed in by Old. Injury time goal to Adelaide. Att 7200. Back on top of league after CCM knocked us off yesterday.
Sat Mar 9 away Melbourne City loss 0 1   37 degrees! Defended a lot and played on the counter. 0 - 0 HT. City scored with a back post header from a free kick. Kosta was put thru, glorious pass from Kraev, but put it wide. Finn Surman superb goal line clearances and defending. Gabriel Sloane-Rodrigues debut late. Knocked off top of league by CCM.
Sat Mar 16 'home' Sydney FC win 2 1 O.G, Barbarouses Last ever 'home' game at Eden Park, since new Auckland A League team will be playing next season. 18002 attendance. Zawada still injured. Sydney scored first after ref didn't give a foul on Pennington. Kosta missed decent chance. Under pressure in first half. Another Syd goal ruled out for handball in the build up. 0-1 HT. Kosta cross turned into own net by Syd defender. VAR overturned the linesman's offside flag. Kosta cut inside, beat two then scored crowd erupted! Intruder on pitch in new Auckland colours tackled by security. Phoenix back on top of league.
Sun Mar 31 home Brisbane Roar win 1 0 Kraev Easter Sunday. Surman with lucky head bandage, covering stitches from AW's training. Nix score great goal 76 seconds after kick off. Ball touched by all outfield players. Sutton final ball to Kraev to slide home. 8300 att. Brisbane a lot of pressure on us to equalise. Salas and Al Taay struggling on right defence, with Payne still out injured. Old subbed on made a big difference. Set up Kosta for terrific goal that was disallowed for marginal offside. Fever chanting to injured Zawada in the grandstand. Rufer yellow card upgraded to red for standing on player who had the ball between his legs! Suspended for next game.
Sat Apr 6 away Central Coast Mrns loss 1 2 Old Top of the table clash. Both teams cagey first half. Nix mostly sitting back. CCM score with a fine diving header. Kosta has a header cleared off the line. Payne subbed on, back from injury. Van Hattum great cross for Old to tap in. Injury time late excellent curler from their right back to take the game and go Top of the table.
Fri Apr 12 home Melbourne Victory win 1 0 F. Surman Miserable conditions for super important game. Even first half. Nix had chances in second half, Old missed two of them. Paulsen pulled off one really good save from Fornaroli. Bonevacia came on for Victory. Kraev hit the post with curling shot. OVH subbed on with ten to go. He won a free kick in 95th min, sent in beautiful cross for Finn Surman diving header to win the game. Top of the league again, but only for one day!
Fri Apr 19 away Newcastle Jets draw 1 1 Barbarouses Lots of Jets early pressure, then a Paulsen own goal, knocking a cross into his net. All out attack second half. Their keeper made fine saves, we hit woodwork twice. Kosta headed Old cross in. Zawada came on in final minutes after months out injured. Injury time penalty, Rufer hit the outside of the post! Top of league again , but CCM have game in hand.
Sat Apr 27 home Macarthur win 3 0 Barbarouses, Payne, Zawada Final normal season game. Crowd 15,000. Great ball from Pennington put Kosta through and he slotted it. Tim Payne headed in a good cross from Old for a 2 - 0 HT lead. Macarthur pressed hard in second half. In stoppage time Zawada won a penalty after ex-Nix keeper Kurto tripped him. He converted. Nix still lead the league, but CCM won too and can take the premiership if they get a point against Adelaide on Wed.

Sun Oct 15 home Melbourne City loss 0 1   Debuts for our first ever visa players: outstanding goalkeeper Rylee Foster (recovered now from near fatal car accident), fullback Hailey Davidson, attacker Hope Breslin and striker Mariana Speckmaier. Very windy. Youngster Manaia Elliot impressed with some good running at the defence. Michaela Foster captain in absence of Annalie Longo. City scored after Kiwi star Hannah Wilkinson pounced on a spilled shot.
Sun Oct 22 away Westn Syd Wandrrs win 3 0 M. Speckmaier, M. Fraser, M. Elliot Lovely team play at times, some super skill from Hope Breslin and Macey Fraser, who hit the crossbar. The home team improved after half time, but Speckmaier headed in from a corner. Mac Barry a superb tackle to deny an equaliser. Chloe Knott fantastic as sub. Late goal by Macey Fraser after fine run by Maiaia Elliot. Elliot then scored to put the icing on the cake and had another shot saved onto the bar.
Sat Nov 4 home Brisbane Roar win 2 1 Speckmaier, A. Longo A double header with the men. First minute injury Grace Wisnewski. Great delivery free kick Michaela Foster, glancing header after good run by Speckmaier. Longo subbed on late second half on debut and made impact. Beat several players in a run into box, cut back and scored. Roar scored 5 min into added time. Kate Taylor doing well in defensive midfield.
Sun Nov 12 home Western United win 3 1 C. Knott, Fraser, O. Goal First game in new home venue at Porirua. A crowd of more than 1700. Survived early pressure. Michaela Foster corner bundled in by Chloe Knott. Soon after a superb free kick by Fraser curled over the wall into the top corner. 2 - 0 half time. Another Foster corner was headed into own goal. In injury time WU consolation goal. Kate Taylor in top form in midfield.
Sat Nov 18 away Central Coast Mrnrs loss 0 1   A few chances on the break in first half. Emma Main had shot palmed onto crossbar. 0 - 0 half time. Mariners caught the Nix on the break to finish a well worked goal. Speckmaier the most likely, but could have been in trouble for a frustrated kick off the ball. Breslin head clash late. Van der Meer and Barry strong in centre defence.
Sat Nov 25 home Perth Glory win 2 1 H. Breslin, Knott Second game in a great double header at Mt Smart. Started well, but a misplaced pass from M Foster created chance and Glory took lead. Strong second half performance. Chloe Knott doing great work in midfield, pass to Hope Breslin who scored well. The hard-working Speckmaier hit the crossbar with a header and Knott power-headed in the rebound. Shirts off twice in the day!
Sun Dec 10 home Melbourne Victory draw 2 2 K. Taylor, E. Main No Chloe Knott! Sadly, Knott pulled out of the team in the break, citing financial and integrity reasons. No Marissa Vander Meer, did her ACL on NZ duty. Strong tail wind first half. Victory scored from corner, 45 sec later Nix scored from corner - Speckmaier headed back across goal for Taylor to head in. Hard midfield battle. Kelli Brown longshot came back off woodwork and Emma Main headed it in. Keeper Rylee Foster misjudged a ball in the wind and was beaten to it for the equaliser. 2 - 2 half time. Zoe McMeeken full game left back, did well. Alyssa Whinham subbed on, first time for ages, created two great chances for Speckmaier and Breslin.
Sat Dec 16 away Adelaide Utd loss 1 2 Main Lots of chances in first half. Only one converted, slip ball from Fraser to Main who slotted it home. Lost composure in second half. A poor defensive header led to keeper Foster making a fine tackle but the loose ball was fired home. Late in the game a free kick came out of the sun and keeper Foster misjudged it to palm it into her net.
Sat Dec 23 home Newcastle Jets win 2 0 Speckmaier (pen), Breslin. Both goals in first half. Breslin brought down in the box and Speckmaier blasted in the penalty, Speckmaier a great run and pull back for Breslin's goal. Longo really stamping her determination on the game. McMeeken and Taylor strong games. Debut appearance for Isobel Cox.
Fri Dec 29 away Sydney FC loss 0 1   Passing not so good today. Michaela Foster and Barry strong in defence. Davidson subbed with bloody nose. Sydney scored from header. Speckmaier missed an open header from a good cross by the lively Cox. Bri Edwards in goal for R Foster who was out with concussion.
Sun Jan 7 away Brisbane Roar loss 1 2 I. Cox Played well for first 25 min. Cox scored from header from one of several M. Foster corners. R. Foster terrible error, passed ball straight to their player who chipped her to score. Nix couldn't really get it going again after that. Fraser worked hard. Barry and Longo played well. In the final minutes the ref failed to spot a blatant handball on the goal line that prevented a shot from Cox scoring.
Fri Jan 12 'home' Central Coast Mrnrs loss 1 2 Main Unity round. Controversially keeper Brianna Edwards and Manaia Elliot given a week off. Whinham 1st start for season. Early goal, won ball off their defence, Main slotted goal well. 25 CCM scored good goal. 35 CCM took ball off us and scored again. 1 -2 HT.
10 goalmouth scramble shots blocked on line. Breslin subbed on, did well. 42 Speck bought down but ruled offside. 44 Longo shot hit arm but no pen.
Sat Jan 20 away Melbourne City loss 1 2 Speckmaier A lot of defending in the first half. 0 - 0 HT. More chances after break. City took lead after good hold up and a poor touch fom Breslin. Scored again after a good attack. McMeeken subed on into midfield and made a difference. A long ball in nodded on by Speckmaier, Cox shot blocked, Speckmaier smacked in rebound. City player red carded for innocuous challenge. Longo good in midfield. Barry off injured.
Sun Jan 28 home Canberra Utd win 2 0 Speckmaier (2) A breezy game in Porirua. Barry and M. Foster out injured, Main sick. Very makeshift defence. Tiana Jaber starts CB with Lake. McMeeken lively from left back, won the ball pass to Cox, delicate pass thru for Speckmaier to smack home. Goal disallowed for push on the keeper. After HT Speckmaier headed in a corner at back post. 65 min, keeper R Foster red carded for an apparent elbow at a corner. Shock all around. Bri Edwards subbed on (for Fraser), saved the resulting penalty with her first touch!
Sun Feb 4 away Newcastle Jets loss 2 3 Speckmaier, Cox Lake injured, Barry back. Started strongly. Cox passed in to Speckmaier, who twisted free and scored. Longo and McMeeken good interpassing, Zoe hit the post. Jets came back into it and scored from long distance. Longo then had a shot saved onto the post. Speckmaier limped off injured. HT 1 - 1. Jets scored, then good long pass from Fraser put Cox away who scored well. Brianna Edwards pulled off an amazing leaping save to claw a header out of goal. Jets scored again before a McMeeken pass found Davidson who hit the post.
Sun Feb 18 away Western United loss 0 3   6 players out with Football Ferns duties, though Fraser and Longo sent home injured. Speckmaier injured. Makeshift team, down 1 - 0 HT. Lake and McMeeken good in defence.. Whinham showed those classy skills in only her second start of the season.
Sun Mar 3 away Melb Victory loss 3 5 o.g., M. Robertson, Speckmaier Poor defending, down 0 - 4 HT. Scored via own goal from corner, Victory scored again. Then a more aggressive attitude saw the Nix winning more midfield ball and putting pressure on. Good passing from Whinham. Robertson scored, hitting home a loose ball in the box. Whinham pass was well struck home by Speckmaier.
Fri Mar 8 away Perth Glory win 3 1 A. Whinham, Robertson, Fraser Midnight kick off! Lake injured after landing heavily on her knee. Cox floated cross to Alyssa Whinham to head home at far post. Perth goal back after crowding out the keeper at a free kick. 1 - 1 HT. Nix dominant in second half. Whinham lovely ball to Robertson to run behind defender and slot home. Whinham shot well saved. Main hit woodwork. Fraser subbed on late and powered in a great strike from distance.
Sun Mar 17 home Sydney FC loss 2 4 Cox, Speckmaier Down 0 - 3 (one a brilliant volley by Courtney Vine, one a poor own goal) Cox subbed on and made huge difference. Outjumped keeper to head in. Cross not cleared and belted home by Speckmaier. 2 - 3, then late poor defending conceded again. Breslin good in def midfield. Kate Taylor subbed on afterweeks away, did well.
Wed Mar 20 home Adelaide Utd win 4 0 Speckmaier, Taylor, Robertson, M. Foster Fraser won the ball and put Speckmaier through on goal. Whinham hit the post. Taylor scored after multiple shots. Main cross for Robertson to bundle in.
Robertson got away down the left and pulled it across for captain Foster to blast home. Cox made some great touches and Barry was as usual immense at the back.
Sun Mar 24 away Canberra Utd loss 0 1   Dominated quite a bit of the game, missed several headers, decent chances. Whinham on as a sub (!) in second half lifted the game, but a good cross and header scored late winner for Canberra.
Sat Mar 30 home Westn Syd Wandrrs win 2 0 Main (2) Fianl game. M. Barry first Nix woman to get to 50 games. Emma Main great diving header, from Manaia Elliot cross. Second goal went through keeper's hands. Young reserve keeper Aimee Danieli subbed on and pulled off super save tipping free kick onto crossbar. Finished in 8th place out of 12.
