Whakatane Town 0, Plains Rangers men 0

14th May 2016

The Sponsors' Cup is up for grabs... will Rangers retain it, or will Whakatane take it back? James Krause had a terrific game in the centre midfield. He could be seen racing back to do last ditch defending in the final minutes. He also nearly won a penalty in the first half.
It was good to see Mark Jeynes back on the pitch. Sadly Mark is moving off to a new job in Tirau soon. Aaron Muggeridge tries his old tricks on George Dalgity (brother of Rangers captain Matt). George is watching closely!
Matt Dalgity kept the Rangers defence together. He looks up field for his options. Both Sione and Tijmen are closely marked. A good midfield battle. Sione Lotu and Jordan Ogilvy come in to put pressure on the ball.
Sione sends over a corner and everyone makes their moves to get to it.

The Rangers bench with the cup still on the line. Sione is monstered by ex-Rangers player Graeme Sims. Andy Willis and James Hart (playing in his last game for a while) give Sione moral support.
Muggsy keeps the pressure on Juan Propato as the Argentinian tries his tricks. Sione is on the break.
Rangers keeper and player-coach Christian Wetting plays the ball out. Peter Kirkbride, probably still celebrating Middlesbrough's promotion to the premier league, watches anxiously, while Bazza, running the flag, makes sure they are following the rules. Juan offloads the ball, with Tijmen and Muggsy keeping him under pressure.
Sione has raced down the wing and then pulls it back inside for the midfield. Muggsy gets into a good position in the box.

The final score: 0 - 0. A point apiece and Rangers keep the cup till next time the two teams meet, which is only a week away!
